Secondary 1 (Checkpoint)

Secondary School begins from the age of 11. Students in Years 7 to 9, follow a course of study which provides a broad and balanced range of learning experiences.

The student schedule devotes four hours a week to each of the core subjects: English, Mathematics and Science. Students also learn:  Information & Communication Technology, History, Geography, Visual Arts,Performing Arts, Physical Education and choose one Modern Language from French, German, Spanish, Turkish and English as a Second Language.

In Years 7 to 9 students are assessed regularly throughout the year in a variety of ways, depending on the subject and the kind of work undertaken. In May all students sit an internal examination in all subjects studied and the Year 9 students take the Cambridge Checkpoint Examinations for English, Mathematics and Science, that provide detailed feedback on the students’ strengths and weaknesses before they progress to post-age 14 qualifications. At the end of each trimester all students receive a report card containing a percentage grade and a comment for every subject studied.

In the second trimester of Year 9 students are guided to make decisions concerning the courses they will pursue from Year 10.
