Message from the Principal

Dear Parents,

Thank you to all of you who came to our family orientation day. It was lovely to welcome all the new families into our community.

We have had a great start to the year. I have enjoyed meeting parents and students, and I can already sense what a strong community we have here. During our whole school assembly on the first day, I asked that students come up and introduce themselves to me when they see me outside of lessons. I am delighted to say that they have been doing just that and I already understand what a diverse and delightful body of students we have here. I am very happy to be a part of this great team called MEF Izmir.

I hope that everyone has a rewarding school year with plenty of positive friendships and stimulating learning experiences (yes, you too, parents!). I look forward to building bridges with you all.

Warm regards,

Ulfet Okbay

Primary News

Dear new and returning Parents,

Welcome to MEF IS Izmir! My name is Sara Borgarelli, I am from Italy and I have two children at the school. After holding various positions in the school, both in the Primary and Secondary sections, last year I was appointed as the Deputy Principal for the Primary division. I am also the Volunteer Liaison and your first point of contact for concerns to do with the catering at the school and the service buses.  If you would like to review the presentations shared on Family Orientation Morning, please click on  Lower Primary presentation or Upper Primary presentation.

I would like to start this academic year by congratulating our Year 6 students who are moving to Secondary this year; in particular, I would like to mention those who achieved the highest possible score in their Cambridge Checkpoint Examinations and are still here at the school: Erin Murray (Maths) and Joona Tiira (Maths).

In order to make progress, students need to know where they are in their learning, and teachers need this information to be able to plan accordingly and meet the students' academic needs. This is why we carry out diagnostic assessments in Maths and English at the beginning of the school year. All new students in Years 3 to 6 will be assessed for Maths and English/English Support next week; results will be shared with you via email as soon as all tests have been graded. If you have any concerns or questions, please contact me.

I wish all of your children a pleasant and successful academic year, and look forward to working with you all.

At IGCSE, Roosa and Mojan were received distinction awards for their overall achievement in the International Certificate of Education (ICE) award. Congratulations to all our students on their examination success.

Official statements of results for IGCSE, AS and A level are available for collection from Ms Selin Belik.

Parent Council

Dear Parents,

The Parent Council (PC) of MEFIS Izmir wants to welcome all parents for the school year 2016-2017!

The PC represents parents of MEFIS Izmir students. At the moment we have only three active members, so we need more representatives and we also need volunteers for the social events we organise during the year. Please let us know if you are interested! If you would like to get general updates by email, sign up for our email list at  or like our Facebook Page:

During the year the PC organises also monthly coffee mornings for all parents. The coffee mornings are organised all over Izmir and locations vary during the year. During these coffee mornings, parents have the opportunity to meet other parents and also share their ideas, comments and questions. The PC uses this input for the official meetings with the school management in Izmir. We would like to invite you all for our first coffee moment at Friday September 23rd at 13.30 at the Early Years garden (playground on the right side of the school).

We wish you a sunny weekend, after these first two days of school and hope to see you Friday September 23rd!

From the Counselor

Welcome to the 2016-17 school year at MEF IS Izmir!

We are excited to see our returning students back after the long summer break, and loved meeting all our new friends!

To those new to MEF IS, my name is Carolina (or Ms. Carol), I am a school counselor/psychologist from Porto Alegre, Brazil. This is my second year at MEF IS Izmir. I work with the whole school, from Reception 1 all the way up to Year 13. I deal with all things related to social, emotional and academic development, as well as university preparation and applications for Secondary students.

In these first few weeks I will be visiting classrooms, supporting new students' adaptation to school, helping out with the younger students and getting to know them better. I will also be working on Student Council, together with Mr. Angus (Year 6 teacher) and guiding the election process for this great student leadership team. You will be hearing more information about STUCO soon! I will also be leading PSHE assemblies for both Primary and Secondary levels.

Please, encourage your child to come see me if they are having  a difficult time in school. Students can come talk to me about any topics, from friendships to being homesick, conflicts, anxiety, fears, relationships, making decisions, stress, organization skills, study skills, planning for the future, changes and transitions, etc.

I can meet with students on a need-basis, and if your child is referred to Counselling by a teacher or administrator and we decide he/she would benefit from regular weekly or bi-weekly sessions, you will receive a letter of consent with more information.

If you would like to talk about your child's development, adaptation to school or any other concerns, please feel free to contact me via We can make an appointment to meet if you prefer. I welcome every opportunity to learn more about your child and be able to better support students in their journey at MEF IS and beyond!

I will also be publishing articles for our weekly newsletter and look forward to discuss a variety of topics related to parenting and child/adolescent development, as well as sharing resources you can use at home. If you have any comments or suggestions, please contact me; your feedback is valuable!

I wish us all a wonderful new school year!

Ms. Carolina Barboza

School Counsellor
