Message From the Principal

Dear Parents,

If you come to our campus regularly, you will know that the temperature here can be quite different from other parts of Izmir. It can be particularly cold in the mornings or when it is windy. Please be sure that your children come to school dressed in layers so that they can adapt to the changing weather we have during the day. Also, please do not send your children to school when they are unwell, particularly those in primary, as it usually means that these students spend the day with the nurse or we end up having to call you to collect them.

We have come to the part of the trimester where lost property items are numerous. If you have any items missing, please be sure to check the lost property cupboards in school.

Arrangements for our Winter Bazaar, on December 10th, are in full swing. We hope you will all be able to attend. The event is open to the Izmir community and we expect to have 30 vendors attending. However, we would like to assure you that security measures will be tightened in order to ensure that we have a safe and wonderful day.

Finally, please note that our school campus will be closed at 3:30 pm on Thursday, 1st December as all employees will be attending a health and safety training session.

Wishing you a pleasant weekend,

Ulfet Okbay

Primary News

This half term students in Year 4 have been studying in Science the topic of States of the Matter; they have investigated properties of solids, liquids and gases and learnt how matter can change from one state to another. At home they became young scientists and experimented with various materials and looked at condensation, evaporation, melting, boiling and freezing. They also produced beautiful posters that are now on display outside the Year 4 classroom.

The CIE Science curriculum from Year 1 to 6 explores the areas of Biology, Chemistry and Physics while developing students' scientific inquiry and investigating skills. In the upcoming Trimester 1 reports, you may find that teachers write N/A  (Not Applicable) in one of the strands. That means that during this trimester only one of the strands was covered; the others will be studied during the rest of the year.

Secondary News

Trimester Examination Results

Trimester examinations are now complete. Next week, students will receive their results with guidance from their teachers on their areas of strength as well as knowledge or skills they need to revise and improve.
Students should use the feedback from their teachers to plan their revision for the next trimester.

Subject focus - Art

Lower secondary students have been studying Pop Art, focusing particularly on Wayne Thiebaud.  He is famous for his paintings of cakes and desserts, and the students have enjoyed learning about representing cylindrical forms with this topic.
First, we practiced using soft pastels to accurately shade the cylindrical cakes, and the students are now working on designing a more complex cake in the style of their choice

Chocolate cake by Paula (Yr 9), Three tiered cake by Linda (Yr 7).

Just Breathe: short film for children (and adults)

This video is under four minutes and displays six children explaining how anger feels like and how they can help their minds and bodies to calm down. It is a great example of science and mindfulness applied to real life and shows great advice for children (and adults)!

You can find the video here:

"Just Breathe" by Julie Bayer Salzman & Josh Salzman (Wavecrest Films) https://youtu.be/RVA2N6tX2cg

And here is the original article about it:

For an extra sensory tool, the Calm Glitter Jars or bottles are easy to make and the kids really love it! There are several DYO tutorials online.
