Message from the Principal

Dear Parents,

On Monday, we had many strange and unusual students around school. I am referring to all those wonderful students who dressed up for halloween, of course! I wish to thank our Student Council for organising the competition for that day. It was great to see them at the closing assembly where they had the whole school involved in deciding who had the best costume. Keep up the good work, StuCo.

Following feedback from the Parent Council, we have planned a coffee morning with myself and Ms. Edria Murray for all those secondary parents who have concerns regarding academic issues. We will also discuss the IB Diploma programme at this meeting. The meeting will be at 10 am on Thursday, 17th November.

Please note that we will have the school photographer in next week on Wednesday and Friday. If your child is absent on those days, there will still be a chance to get their photos taken though  it won’t be until next trimester. (For further information, please contact Ms. Selin.)

Wishing you a pleasant weekend,

Ulfet Okbay

Primary News

Year 6 presented their class assembly on Monday, October 24th. It was well attended by all of the Primary classes. The students demonstrated their knowledge of organs (Science), fictional genres (Literacy), and Mayan culture and religion (Social Studies). They also sang, Demons by Imagine Dragons. The students of Year 6 showed how responsible they are by writing, practicing, and performing the assembly with only some direction by their teacher. Well done, Year 6!

Year 4 students went on an educational excursion to the Savkar Gym last Thursday, November 3rd. They had the opportunity to take part in a gymnastics and fitness workshop given by qualified coaches in a safe and warm environment; this experience was not only good for their physical development but also helped them develop their team and communication skills. Students were able to apply knowledge of the topics studied so far in Science and Social Studies: Keeping Healthy and Fit, and Bones and Muscles, and had a lot of fun!

Secondary News

Trimester examinations for year 10 - 13 will take place between 21 and 25 November. Students are expected to come to school as usual during the examination week. When they do not have an examination, students will have supervised study time and will be able to receive assistance from their teachers in preparation for the examinations.

To prepare for their examinations, students should:

-       Check the examination instructions provided by their teacher.

-       Ask for help if they find a topic difficult.

-       Ensure that they have the necessary equipment for their examinations.

-       Plan their revision to ensure that they have sufficient time to revise for all topics in all subjects. Study sessions should include breaks of approximately 10 minutes after each hour of study.

-       Maintain health through regular exercise, balanced diet and good sleep habits.

Community Service Assembly

As a part of our secondary school community service program this year, we are planning to work with three NGO organizations.  LÖSEV is the one the organizations.  LÖSEV is  aiming to provide educational and emotional support, financial assistance and health services for children who have leukemia or chronic blood disorders, in order to help them cope with a life-threatening illness.

On 24th October the event coordinator of the LÖSEV, Burak Korkmaz, made a presentation about LÖSEV and gave information about their organization to our secondary students. He also talked about the importance of healthy lifestyle choices to prevent cancer.  Thank you to Mr Burak Korkmaz, .

Each year 2-8 November is known as “Week for Children With Leukemia”. We aim to create social awareness and support of the LÖSEV campaign.

LÖSEV established LÖSANTE in Ankara– the Hospital for Children with Leukemia, which provides the latest facilities and  advantages of modern medicine for children who have leukemia.

Happiness, morale and attachment to life play as important a role as medicines in the treatment of leukemia. LÖSEV is organizing some activities for the kids at the hospital that week and they accept gifts from the other kids.

As a CS we are planning to send our students products to their hospital.

Our students can;

-   make a card and write their wishes. (English,Turkish or in their own language)

-   create a gift (any hand craft work)

-   make a poster

-   draw a picture.

-   write a letter or poem.

They can also donate some useful items (book, games, supplies, clothes  in good condition)

Students may leave their items at Miss Selin' office. Thank you.

Planning for life after Secondary School

Preparing for University and life after secondary school is a complex task. It starts way before senior year!

Each student plan should be created individually and the student should be the one in charge of making things happen: researching, creating a list of colleges and degrees, keeping track of deadlines and requirements... Of course, this should be done in collaboration with teachers, parents, principal and counsellor. It is essential that students meet with the counsellor regularly to work on their career plans and application process.

To facilitate the process, please refer to the following very useful tools:

UCAS - For UK Applications, students should register on https://www.ucas.com/ The deadline for applications for the 2017-18 school year entrance is JANUARY 15th. As our goal, MEF students should complete their applications before December 15th. Visit the UCAS website for guidance on how to write a Personal Statement and search for unis in the UK.

Commom Application - For US/Canada Applications, students should visit the specific university website for details on how to apply, but many process the application via The Common App: www.commonapp.org

The College Board https://www.collegeboard.org/ is the site to visit for information and registration to the SAT exam and excellent college planning resources such as how to create a college list and write an essay (USA).
