Message from the Principal

Dear Parents,

Last week we met with the core members of our Parent Council (PC). I want to take this moment to thank Dagmar, Bibi & Amanda for all their efforts. I especially appreciate how they approach their roles in a spirit of partnership. Please support the PC (as I know many of you do) - they are still in need of a secretary, if anyone would like to volunteer.

After receiving the suggestion from the PC, we met with Year 13 students to look at changing the date of the Prom. Please note that this year’s prom will now be on Friday, 9th June.

I would now like to draw attention to the efforts of our Student Council (StuCo). My thanks go to them for trying to create a stronger school spirit by organising our Friday dress-up days. They have many ideas for the coming months and I wish them every success in making these happen. They have also worked hard to try and reverse the decision on in-school printing for upper secondary and I am delighted to announce that their efforts have paid off. This has been a great example of organised campaigning. Well done, StuCo!

Finally, yesterday we had a small memorial assembly for our school’s founder, Dr. Ibrahim Arikan. He was an inspirational man and is sorely missed. Please click here for the presentation we screened for the students describing his life story.  During this assembly and minute of silence, I was greatly  impressed with our student’s reverence and respect. I’m sure Ibrahim bey would have been very proud of them!

Warm regards,

Ulfet Okbay

Trimester Examinations

Trimester examinations will take place from 22 February to March 3. For students in year 11 to 13, the trimester examinations will follow the format of the final Cambridge examinations.

Students should ensure that they are prepared and have the necessary equipment for their examinations.

Paper translation dictionaries are permitted in many IGCSE examinations. Students who wish to use a translation dictionary should check with their teachers.

Community Service

As a part of the community service program, Year 7 and Year 9 students visited EÇEV School in Altındağ - İzmir on Thursday, February, 2nd 2017. Our students observed their educational life and they  had a chance to help less fortunate children by participating in their art lessons and improving their social awareness skills.
Our students helped Eçev students with their art project, they made a poster together and presented the posters to the group. Our students were helpful and friendly during the activities and enjoyed working  and communicating with them. The EÇEV students were also very happy to be with our students.

Primary News

Our week started in Primary with a Dance Show assembly attended by all students in Years 1 to 6. This month students did a unit on Dance in PE; they put together some choreographies under Miss Samantha's lead and showcased them to the audience on Monday morning. Our PE curriculum includes various units on individual and team sports to make sure students get a taste of each sport but also develop a variety of skills.

While having fun, the Dance unit allows students to meet a various objectives, such as: show spacial awareness in large and small movements; show creativity and storytelling in dance using the body; understand and develop emotions through dancing on different genres of music; understand the importance of breathing correctly when dancing for sustained periods of time. After our mid-term break, students will move on to their next unit, Health & Fitness.

Dear Parents,

This Thursday we set up a stand for Valentine’s Day where students can place orders,  write their own card and choose the chocolates they want to offer to their (secret) admirer. We will open the stand again on Tuesday and Wednesday next week for those students who did not get a chance to order on Thursday. Also, next Friday we will have Character Day, so kids make sure to dress up because we will be taking pictures!

Warm regards,

Self-esteem and body image

In the past weeks the Lower Secondary students have been learning about self-esteem, body image and the influence of media.

As a final project, students created posters with images and slogans to promote a positive body-image and self-esteem. There are some powerful messages! You can have a sneak peek in the photos, or stop by to check out their work on the second floor of Block A.

Take this opportunity to talk to your child, no matter what age, about the importance of loving yourself and celebrating differences. Valuing yourself as a person promotes better self-care and resilience to face difficulties. A strong sense of self-worth also helps foster self-confidence and less dependence on external feedback (relying on the opinion and judgement of others).

Next week, Primary students in Years 4 to 6 will have an assembly about self-esteem. Stay tuned!
