Message from the Principal

Dear Parents,

If you have been on campus this week, you will have noticed some changes to our entrance. We now have some railings to guide all pedestrians through security. The purpose of the railings is to get everyone into the practice of going through security. In future, these railings will be replaced with something more substantial.

Everyone who passes through security is expected to put their bags through the x-ray machine and to walk through the metal detector. Regular checks are made on these instruments and you may be reassured that they are safe. According to the Health Physics Society they are not harmful to children, pregnant women or food (for more information, please see here - or for Turkish, here).

We are also looking at alternatives for how best to have buses on campus. We really want to have only one gate open during their entrance and exit. For that reason, we ask that all parents avoid parking on the land directly opposite the school car park gate.

Finally, if your children use the school bus, please be sure to complete the survey in this week’s bulletin. We will use this information to help us in deciding whether or not to continue with the same bus company next year.

Wishing you a pleasant weekend,

Ulfet Okbay

Y1 Fire Station Ed-Ex

Primary News

This week we had two fantastic educational excursions in Lower Primary. Year 1 students went to visit the local Gaziemir Fire Station, and had the opportunity to observe the fire engines, hear the sirens, go up in the crows nest and ask questions to the fire fighters. This excursion linked in with the learning objectives for the Social Studies unit ' Jobs in our Community'.

Year 2 students visited the historical site of Metropolis and had a chance to admire the ruins and think about different kinds of building structures and how buildings have evolved through the years, as part of the Social Studies unit on ' Buildings from the present and the past' . Some students were lucky enough to find some precious ancient artifacts while exploring the site!

Getting the best exam results

In preparation for the Trimester 2 examinations, students have been provided with revision information including the type and number of examinations, and the content areas that will be tested.

To support their revision, students are encouraged to:

- Have a study plan which includes rest breaks of approximately 5 minutes each hour.

- Maintain good nutrition and sleeping habits during the exam weeks.

- Set realistic goals.

- Summarise important information.

- Use a range of revision techniques including colour coding, reading aloud, discussing content and explaining to others.

- Ensure they are familiar with the examination structure and environment.

Students who feel they need advice on managing their revision and examinations should seek advice from our counselor, Ms. Carolina.

Trimester examinations will take place from February 22 to March 3 for Year 11 to 13 and from Feb 27 to March 3 for Year 10.

Paper Napkin Mental Health Challenge #3: Mindfulness

Another super simple and easy mental health challenge that you can try for yourself and your child. There is a lot of talk about mindfulness, and it can seem like a complicated concept sometimes. But it basically means to be in the present moment. This week’s article questions “with all the chaos in our minds, how can we remember to slow down and stay grounded in the present moment?” The answer: change our thinking from “What If” to “What Is”.

Using nothing but a piece of paper and a pencil, this exercise helps you focus on your 5 senses and your feeling, right here and now.

-Grab a paper napkin, and draw a grid with 6 squares.

-In each square at the top draw (yes, draw!) an image of one of your senses. Leave the last square blank.

-Today, any time your mind goes into a What Iffing frenzy bring yourself back into the moment by going through all 5 of your senses and writing a short note related to that sense in the corresponding box.

-Use the last empty square as a feelings tracker!
